Fertilization and development in Pheretima:

  • Pheretima is a long, narrow and cylindrical shaped earthworms that belong to the Phylum Annelida.
  • Earthworms are hermaphrodites which means the presence of 'both male and female reproductive organs' in the same organism.
  • External fertilisation takes place in Pheretima.
  • Fertilization and development occur inside the Cocoons
  • The cocoons are deposited in the soil.
  • When the earthwarms are in mating, exchange their sperms between them. It is called as copulation.
  • After copulation, the worms are separated from each other.
  • When the ovaries mature, they produce cocoons which are produced by the gland cells of Clitellum.
  • Inside the cocoon, the sperm and the egg fuses.
  • The fertilised egg grows as a young worm. Here there is no larval stage.
