( 1 ) A mnemonic concering the behaviour of a current - carrying in magnetic field , according to which the the directions of the magnetic field , the current , and the force exerted on the conductor are indicated respectively by the first finger , second finger , and thumb of the left hand when these are held out perpendicular to each other .

Fleming's left hand rule :

The forefinger, the middle finger and the thumb of the left hand are stretched in mutually perpendicular directions. If the forefinger points in the direction of the magnetic field, the middle finger in the direction of current, then the thumb points in the direction of the force on the conductor.
