Aestivation or estivation is the positional arrangement of the parts of a flower within a flower bud before it has opened. Aestivation is also sometimes referred to as praefoliation or prefoliation, but these terms may also mean vernation: the arrangement of leaves within a vegetative bud.

  • It is the mode of arrangement of sepals for petals in floral but with respect to other members of the whorl.
  • The main types of aestivation include :
  1. Valvate aestivation
  2. Twisted aestivation
  3. Imbricate aestivation
  4. Vexilliary aestivation
  • If the petals or sepals whorl around and not touch each other at the margin, then they are said to be in velvate aestivation.
  • If the petals or sepals overlap each other, then they are said to be in twisted aestivation.
  • If the petals or sepals overlap each other but not in particular direction, theb they are said to be in imbricate aestivation.
  • If the petals or sepals which turn and overlap each other and there are two lateral and two smallest anterior petals then they are said to be in vexilliary aestivation.
