There are only two articles “The” &“a” in English grammar. They are placed before a noun.

The article “a” when put before a noun, is used to depict a single quantity.

For example

she has a cat.

Here, at the above sentence “a" signifies that she has only one cat.

The article “The” is used before a noun only when the noun is known to us, or is understood or when we talk about a specific noun. There are some nouns which have already the article “The” placed fixed before them, ex. The sun, the earth and so on....

For example

There was a boy running in the park. The boy fell after he'd run few yards.

From the above sentences, “a” is used before the noun “boy” , and at the second sentence “the” is used because because we know whom we are talking about i.e the boy running in the park.
