Answer:
Fountain experiment is used to demonstrate the solubility of the gas. Here am explaining the solubility of HCl gas. Demonstration: Take a dry round bottomed flask filled with dry HCl gas. Fix a two holed rubber cork on the mouth of round bottomed flask. Fix a jet tube through one hole and fix a dropper with few water drops through other hole. Now put the other end of the jet tube in container containing blue litmus solution.
Now press the dropper. The blue litmus solution enters the jet tube and form a red fountain. When we press the dropper the water molecules goes in the flask. The HCl gas present inside the flask dissolves in water due to its high solubility. It creates a low pressure inside the flask. But the pressure out side the flask being higher, pushes the blue litmus solution inside the flask with a great force and form a fountain.
