During fractional distillation, hydrocarbons are separated according to their specific boiling point. Substances with higher boiling points will condense first at the bottom (warmer-portion) of the fractionating column. Substances with lower boiling points must travel further up the column (cooler-portion) to condense. Horizontal trays are present throughout the column to capture the gas that has condensed at that particular position in the column.
