Free body diagram is nothing but representation of all forces acting on the body.
First , thing is to select a system. It should have identical motion for all its particles.
After selecting the system , visualize all the forces acting on that system. The forces maybe due to system itself or other objects around the system.Do not include the force exerted by the system. Only those forces should be counted that ACT on the system.
And never identify the forces without selecting the system. This only creates confusion.
Now, draw the system separately taking it as a point. Draw vector forces acting on the system.Mention the magnitude and also the direction of those forces in the diagram.
You can see the example of a FBD in the picture that I have provided.
