Answer : Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi. He was a landmark in the history of the freedom movement in India after the world war ,started in 1914 .
- The word satyagraha was first used by Gandhi in South Africa. In protest against the Rowlatt Act, Gandhi started the satyagraha or the non violence movement in India in 1919 .
- Under the leadership of mahatma gandhi ,the Khilafat Committee and the Indian National Congress organised the non cooperation movement. This movement started in 1920 and lasted through 1922. The movement was against the British rule through non violence or ahimsa.
- In 1929, at Lahore congress, it was decided that the goal of the Congress was to attain purna swaraj or complete independence for India. On 31 January 1930 , Gandhi gave an ultimatum to the Viceroy Lord Irwin to remove the evils of the British rule with a list of demands such as prohibition of use of intoxicants , Abolition of salt law etc. Gandhi clearly mentioned that if the demands were ignored then the nation would be going to launch the Civil Disobedience movement. Consequently, the civil disobedience movement started in 1930 with the famous salt Satyagraha of Gandhi.
- On March 5, 1931 Gandhi-irwin pact was signed . Holding of the round table conference, the communal award was announced.
- In August 1942 , Gandhi launced the Quit India movement also known as the August movement of the basis of the resolution passed on 8 August 1942 in Bombay by the All India Congress committee , declaring it's demand for an immediate end of the British rule. The nation was inspired by the Gandhi's slogan of " Do or Die " .
