The isomerism which arises due to the difference in spatial arrangement of atoms or groupsabout doubly bonded carbon (C = C) atoms iscalled geometrical isomerism. There are two types of geometrical isomers as follows:
(1) Cis isomer : The geometrical isomer in whichtwo identical or similar atoms or groups lie on the same side of the double bond is called cis-isomer.
(2) Trans isomer : The geometrical isomer in which two identical or similar atoms or groups lie on the opposite side of the double bond is called transisomer.
