In Crustaceans (e.g. Prawn), certain mollusks (e.g. mussels) cartilage fishes, bony fishes and tadpoles of amphibians, respiration occurs through gills. It is called Branchial Respiration. In this, oxygen source is water.

In Bony fishes, Gills are present in gill chambers and are externally covered by gill covers called Operculum. By the Movement of Opercular folds and oral valves present near the mouth, a bony fish maintains a water current which enters through mouth, passes through buccal cavity, pharynx and Opercular chamber, washes the gills and goes out through Opercular aperture.

Exchange of oxygen of water and carbon dioxide of blood capillaries present in gill lamellae occurs when water passes over the gills.
