The examples when the active involvement of local people led to efficient management of forests are:
Bishnoi Community in Rajasthan - They worked traditionally for the conservation of forests. Amrita Devi Bishnoi sacrificed her life along with 363 others for the Protection of ‘khejri’ trees in Khejarli village near Jodhpur in Rajasthan.
The Chipko Andolan - or the ‘Hug the Trees Movement’ was the result of a grassroot level effort of the local People to protect the forests. The movement originated from an incident in a remote village called Reni in Garhwal in the Himalayas during the early 1970s. The local People hugged the trees and prevented the contractors from felling the trees.
