The trends in the following properties of elements on moving from left to right in a period in a periodic table are ::-

1.) variation of valency --- the no. of valence electrons present in the outermost shell of its atom , increases. that is, the valency of the element increases. For e.g. in the 3rd period, Na has valency 1 whereas, Cl has valency 7 and at last Argon is a noble gas.

2.) Change in the atomic radius --- Atomic radius decreses in moving from left to right along a period. This is due to an increase in nuclear charge which tends to pull the electrons closer to the nucleus and reduces the size of the atom. For e.g In 3rd period, Na will have greater atomic radius than Cl.

3.) Metallic to Non - Metallic character --- Nuclear charge acting on the valence shell electrons increases across a period, the tendency to lose electrons will decrease . Hence the metallic character decreases across a period and the Non-Metallic character increases across a period .

For. eg. In 3rd period, Na is a metal ,whereas, Cl is a Non-Metal.
