Humans need to interact with the environment to obtain our food, water, fuel, medicines, building materials and many other things. Advances in science and technology have helped us to exploit the environment for our benefit, but we have also introduced pollution and caused environmental damage. The impact of environmental problems on humans is significant, affecting all human activities, including health and socio-economic development. In this study session you will learn about the relationships between humans and the environment, and the ways in which we use environmental resources.

There are many ways that people have modified  their environment, and the positive & negative consequences which have resulted from these changes.

Explanation:

Agriculture

  • In order to grow food they constantly alter or modify their environment. In "slash and burn" farming, people burn trees and plant crops on the ashes. In mountainous or hilly areas , people adopt terrace farming and break the hillsides into steps to plant crops. Many farmers use today strategies such as leaving the land without cultivating for one-season to replenish their nutrients, rotate crops from field to field, or add fertilizer.
  • Cutting down trees and cultivating crops  increased our food supplies considerably. The population increased exponentially as a result. However, the Earth's soil, air and water has  been polluted because of these modification.  Agriculture has also led to  desertification & deforestation in some areas.

Dam Building

  • A dam is a river-side wall to control water flow. Sometimes people build dams for draining swamps, flood control , energy generation and storing water for drinking and irrigation for using in agriculture.
  • By avoiding floods and supplying water when needed, a dam construction could save thousands of lives. However, a dam could take away water from other areas, & the water reservoir which builds up behind a dam floods that area.

Mining

  • Mining is removing valuable minerals & ores from the Earth. Materials which  are acquired by way of mining comprise metals, oil, coal,  gemstones, natural gas, clay, limestone,  & much more. People use these natural resources to produce energy which makes our modern lifestyle possible; to construct homes, bridges, roads, & buildings, & create beautiful jewellery & other decorations.
  • However, a series of environmental problems can arise from mining. Mining can lead to deforestation and destruction of wildlife ecosystems and wildlife when mining removes an area of their trees and other vegetation. Digging into the earth can occasionally lead to sinkholes. Furthermore, chemicals  can contaminate soil as well as ground water and surface water in some mining operations. This can impair human and animal health in the region.
