The reaction mechanism which results in the conversion of a molecule of glucose (obtained by the breakdown of sucrose) to two molecules of pyruvic acid is called as glycolysis. Glycolysis is also called as EMP pathway since explained by Embden, Mayerhoff, and Parnas for the first time.

Uses:

1) Glycolysis is the first step used for the breakdown of glucose for extraction of energy. In anaerobes, it is the only method for extraction of energy.
