Go East Movement referred to Vietnamese Nationalist that were sent to Japan for acquiring modern education:-
1. In 1907-08, some Vietnamese students went to Japan to acquire modern education.
2.Their primary objective was to drive out the French from Vietnam , overthrow the puppet emperor and reestablishing the Nguyen dynasty that had been deposed by the French.
3. These nationalists looked for foreign arms and help.
4. They appealed to Japan as fellow Asians. It may be mentioned that Japan has modernised itself and had resisted colonisation by the west. It had defeated Russia in 1907 and proved its military capabilities.
5. Vietnamese students established a branch of Restoration society in Tokyo but after 1908, the Japanese ministry of interior clamped down on them. Many including Phan Boi Chau were deported and forced to seek exile in China and Thailand.

'Go east movement' was the popular movement in Vietnam in 20th century. Vietnamese had close links with Japan and China and Japan at that time had developed itself and won over Russia. So thousands of the Vietnamese students visited Japan to get education. and thus the movement became popular. The aim of the Vietnamese was more than just education they wanted to throw French out and to re-establish Nguyen dynasty that was overthrown by the French.
