This is an instrument for detecting and measuring static electricity or voltage. A metal disc is connected to a narrow metal plate and a thin piece of gold leaf is fixed to the plate. The whole of this part of the electroscope is insulated from the body of the instrument.

Electroscope is used to detect weather a body possesses a charge or not and also for measuring the charge present. It consists of a glass bell jar resting on a wooden base and closed with an ebonite stopper having a hole through which brass rod passes. The upper end of the rod has a brass disc attached while the lower end has two gold leaves. The glass vessel protects the gold leaves from air current. The larger the charge on the electroscope, the greater is the divergence of the gold leaves and the electroscope is said to be charged. In this way, the presence of charges of an object can be detected.
