Ground state is the state when electrons have the least amount of energy.

For example - Hydrogen or hydrogen like species have, n=1 that is their ground state.

First excited state is the first energy level that comes after ground state i.e n= 2.

Similarly for second excited state, n = 3 and so on. Thus, we come to know that for nth excited state it has is (n+1)th orbit.
