The gymnosperms, also known as Acrogymnospermae, are a group of seed-producing plants that includes conifers, cycads, Ginkgo, and gnetophytes. The term "gymnosperm" comes from the Greek composite word meaning "naked seeds". The name is based on the unenclosed condition of their seeds. They do not have an outer covering or shell around their seeds. They do not produce flowers. They do not produce fruits. This term comes from the fact that the ovules and seeds of gymnosperms develop on the scales of cones rather than in enclosed chambers called ovaries.

Sporophylls are aggregated to form cones. They are naked seeds. The microspores and megaspores are produced by male and female cones. Vascular tissue such as xylem and phloem does not have trachieds and companion shells. Plant embryos contain many cotleydons.
