Question :-

Explain Haber's Process. Write Chemical Equations if any.

____________________

Answer :-

On an industrial scale, ammonia is prepared by Haber’s process. The constituents of ammonia \sf{N_2}and \sf{H_2} combine in a ratio of 1 : 3.

The reaction then proceeds in forward direction and a noticeable decrease in volume occurs. In accordance to Le Chatelier’s principle, high pressure would favour the formation of ammonia. The optimum conditions for the production of ammonia are a pressure of approx 200 atm, a temperature of approx 700 K and the use of a catalyst such as iron oxide with small amounts of \sf{K_2 O}and \sf{Al_2 O_3} to increase the rate of attainment of equilibrium.

Chemical Equation for the process :-

\boxed{\sf{2N_2 + 3H_2 \rightleftharpoons 2NH_3}}

____________________

Extra Information :-

  • The product formed by Haber's Process is Ammonia \sf{(NH_3)}.

  • It is an artificial nitrogen fixation process and is the mainly for industrial production.

  • The yield of ammonia is altered by increasing the reaction's temperature or pressure because the Haber cycle is a reversible reaction. Increasing the reaction pressure results in an increase in the ammonia yield.

  • This process is also called Haber–Bosch process.

  • The process is named after its inventors, Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch.

Aɳรωεɾ :

The Haber Process is used in the manufacturing of ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen, and then goes on to explain the reasons for the conditions used in the process. The process combines nitrogen from the air with hydrogen derived mainly from natural gas (methane) into ammonia.

Writing Chemical Equations:

  • In a chemical equation, the reactants are written on the left, and the products are written on the right.

  • The coefficients next to the symbols of entities indicate the number of moles of a substance produced or used in the chemical reaction.

▶ Meaning of chemical reaction:

A process that involves rearrangement of the molecular or ionic structure of a substance, as distinct from a change in physical form or a nuclear reaction.
