The presence of calcium and magnesium is responsible for the hardness of water. Zeolite can be used to eliminate this hardness.
The chemical formula for zeolite is Na2.Al2O3.nSiO2.xH2O. The presence of sodium and aluminium in Zeolite leads to the softness of the water.
Process-
- First of all, the zeolite is packed in a reservoir from which the hard water is allowed to pass.
- In the chamber, the exchange of ions takes place. Calcium and Magnesium are exchanged with Sodium and Aluminium.
- As a result, the hardness of water is removed.
