Question :-
Explain harvesting.......
Answer :-
The process of cutting and gathering the ripened crop is called harvesting.
During harvesting, the crops are pulled out or are close to the ground. In India, most of the harvesting is done manually and a sickle is the only tool that is used for this purpose. The sickles are of two types - plain and saw - shaped (serrated). The serrated sickles are used for cutting paddy and wheat crops .
In big fields, some machines such as reapers, threshers aur even combine harvesters are more in use for harvesting. The harvesting with the help of machines enables the farmer to complete the process within a short climatically favourable period and thus the loss of the crop due to untimely rains and stroms can be saved to a large extent. This also gives farmers sufficient time to prepare the field for next sowing.
However, harvesting with machine also has certain disadvantage as given below :
● Harvesting by machines results in shattering of the gain. In case of harvesting with sickles, shattering of the gain is negligible.
● Harvesting from machines such as combined harvesters result in loss of hay and thus , yield less fodder.
After cutting, the crop is gathering at one place and is allowed to dry under the sun for a few days .
