Explain heredity and Inherited and Acquired
Characters (or Traits)
Answers
Heredity is also called inheritance. It is transmission of characters from parents to offspring, generation after generation. It helps us in understanding the basis of similarities between closely related individuals. It also helps to explain differences between parents and offspring and in the siblings (real brothers and sisters).
Characteristics that are inherited by the offspring from the parents are called inherited characters orhereditary characters, such as skin colour, eye colour, height, weight, shape of nose, etc.
Certain characters appear in the individual temporarily in response to the environment such as scar on theforehead or arm, sun-tanned skin, knowledge, skill, etc. These characters are called acquired characters. These cannot be passed on to the offspring of next generation.
