Heterotrophic nutrition:
The mode of nutrition in which the organism is not able to prepare its food by itself and obtains food from green plants or other animals is known as the heterotrophic mode of nutrition.
Examples of heterotrophic nutrition are the higher animals (human beings). They cannot prepare their own food by themselves and obtains food from green plants and other animals. Other examples are bacteria, lion, cuscuta etc.
Three types of heterotrophic nutrition are:
1. PARASITIC: When the organism lives on other organism and obtain their food from them, it is known as parasitic nutrition and the organism is known as a parasite.
Ex: ticks, lice, leeches etc.
2. SAPROPHYTIC: When the organism feed on the dead and decay of plants and animals, it is known as saprophytic nutrition and the organism is called saprophyte.
Example: bacteria, yeast, mushroom etc.
3. SYMBIOTIC: When the give and take relation is maintained between two organisms and both the organisms are benefited, it is known as symbiotic.
Example: It is very common in algae and fungi. They live together and are known as lichen.
