The MBh, scholars tell us, is all about the dharma sookshma, or the subtle dharma. Readers’ interpretation of dharma matters the most. I cite following examples in the story.
Neither Dhritarashtra, born blind, nor Pandu, born with some other ailment, was fit to be crowned. Who should succeed them? The five Pandavas were not Pandu’s biological sons. What claim do they basically have to the throne?Bhishma who abdicated the throne and took a vow of celibacy to please his father, refused to re-consider taking it back when Satyavati asked him to change his mind after the untimely death of Vicitraveerya (and his widows were childless). Was that dharma? Was it dharmic when Yudhishthira gambled away himself first and later, upon prodding from Shakuni, staked and lost Draupadi in the dice game? Was then Draupadi lost and a slave?Drauapdi was a shared wife of all the Pandavas. What right did Yudhishthira (although he was the eldest of brothers) have to stake her in the dice game? What if another husband of Draupadi objected? Vikarna asked these questions. None answered. After losing the second dice game, Pandavas proceeded to the forests, exiled for 12 years in forests and 1 year of life incognito in the Virata capital. And returned. Did they have any right to the throne then to send peace talks emissary (Krishna) to Kauravas?
