Explain Hoffmann reaction with example.

Water molecules are added to the isocyanateto form carbamic acid. Thisreaction is an example of nucleophilic addition. Finally, the carbamic acid loses carbon dioxide, CO2 leading to the formation of primary amine.

Hoffmann's Bromamide reaction : When an acid amide is heated with Br_2 and aq. NaOH solution, 1° amine having one carbon atom less is produced. This reaction is called Hoffman's Bromamide reaction.
