Hope's Apparatus

Hope's apparatus is named after Thomas Charles Hope who was professor of Chemistry at Edinburgh University. Basically, hope's apparatus is a glass cylinder that is encircled by a trench half-way up for the containing of freezing mixture. There are holes at the top and the bottom of the cylinder to allow thermometers to be inserted into the water for measuring temperature. After some time, the dense water at the bottom is collected at a temperature of 4° C. This means that the water density is increased when temperature rises from 0°C to 4°C. Thus, it shows the anomalous behavior of water.
