Hormones in animals conduct a wide variety of functions from growth, sexual development, vegetative development, cellular respiration, metabolism, thermal production and so on. The nervous system coordinates rapid activities of animals like movement, while hormones integrate the coordination. Larger complex animals like vertebrates have endocrine glands to produce hormones.

The well-known animal hormones are insulin, estrogen, testosterone. They are made by endocrine glands of vertebrates. Hormones are made by all organ system and tissues in the body. Most of the hormones are secreted into the blood stream while some hormones known as the ectohormones are not secreted into the blood stream, they travel by diffusion to their target cells. Hormones acts as signals to their target cells, the actions are determined not only on the amounts of hormone secreted but it also depends on the pattern of hormone secretion and on the signal transduction mechanisms of the target tissue.
