When there is any disturbance caused by the hydrochloric acid in the stomach, the pH of the stomach changes from normal pH to more acidic.

To bring this back to normal pH, we use antacids. Antacids are generally basic in nature.

We know that, Acid + Base => Salt + Water

Hence we are making this base react with the excess acid in stomach thereby neutralizing the effect of acid.

So antacid lowers the pH by being more basic in nature. Hence the normal pH is restored.

Some of the antacids are Milk of Magnesia which is chemically known as Magnesium Hydroxide.
