Biofortified staple food grains provide nutrients to the human body, improving nutrition and therefore health. It helps to maintain a healthy body and rectify deficiencies to a certain extent, without having to rely on medicines or supplements. Hence, biofortification helps address malnutrition in the developing world, to a certain degree.

Biofortification is the process of increasing vitamin and mineral content in staple food grains, through scientific and selective plant breeding or through genetic engineering.

Biofortification as a strategy is used for dealing with deficiencies of micronutrients in the developing world because biofortification has various health benefits,  which are essentially free to farmers and consumers, because the prices of the biofortified crops are the same as the prices of the non-biofortified crop. It even process better digestion for these biofortification crops.
