Carbon have a unique ability to form carbon to carbon chain. It has 4 electrons in its outermost Shell. It means that it's valency is 4.
First reason for forming covalent bonds is because of its valency.
Second reason is the carbon's unique ability to form carbon to carbon carbon chain which is called as catenation.
