Respiration is the process during which food or complex glucose,in presence of oxygen, is broken down into simpler substance in order to create energy, during which Co2 is evolved.
In both plants and animals carbon dioxide is only evolved.
In the leaves of the plants, usually during night time, oxygen is taken in through pores called stomata. Then the nutrients, which are taken in (usually through roots), gets broken down into simple consumable form. Later these simple substances are used to make food for the plant for gaining energy for the various life processes. During all this time, Carbon dioxide is released.
