Coal is called a fossil fuel because it was made from plants that were once alive! Since coal comes from plants, and plants get their energy from the sun, the energy in coal also came from the sun. ... Over millions of years, the plants were buried under water and dirt. Heat and pressure turned the dead plants into coal.

Answer:

The trees were not decomposed by anything and were preserved. In time, they were buried. As they went deeper and deeper, temperature and pressure started building up and started to transform into coal.
