a converging lens acts as a magnifying glass when the object is placed between the lens and its focal point f. thus a virtual erect and enlarged image is produced.
the formula for magnification power of a magnifying glass is M= 1+d/f as M is inversely proportional to focal length f, so a lens with a shorter focal length will produce more magnification.
