Data transfer is a step by step process, with each step having its own significance. The physical wires that carry the data has it in the form of electrical voltages. The voltages received have the message in it which can be decrypted using the same set of rules, using which the voltages were made. This can happen due to common set of protocols used across all the computers/routers/network devices used in the world. (this is what the earlier answer mentions too).

Regarding knowing how to send the data to the correct recepient, that happens via routing, which in lay man terms is similar to what happens with a post mail delivery. The zip code is looked up first, then the street, then the house number and eventually the correct recepient gets the data which has been encrypted on the electrical voltages :)

Data travels across the internet in packets. Packets will travel from one machine to another until they reach their destination. As the packets arrive, the computer receiving the data assembles the packets like a puzzle, recreating the message.......
