Forests hold the soil firmly with the help of their roots and also help to maintain and balance Water Cycle.
Due to deforestation, i.e shortage of trees in forest, Desertification will take place because the soil would no longer be firmly hold and thus, the soil will eventually get eroded; the Groundwater would be exposed due to soil erosion and evaporate away as well as their wont be adequate rainfall.

Deforestation → Desertification
- The process of removal of trees is called deforestation.
- Trees are primary factor that help to restore ground water and makes the soil to absorb water. This produces nutrient in the soil. These nutrients are used by plants during growth.
- When trees are removed, the groundwater reduces and the soil has no water to absorb. This makes the soil infertile.
- If the soil is infertile for a long period of time, then it leads to desertification (land becomes dry and there is no chance of plant growth).
