Answer:

Deltas are wetlands that form as rivers empty their water and sediment into another body of water, such as an ocean, lake, or another river. Although very uncommon, deltas can also empty into land. A river moves more slowly as it nears its mouth, or end.

Question

Explain how delta are formed ?

Answer

The main work of the river in it's lower course is deposition . The materials brought down by the river are steadily deposited on mouth in contact of saline water of the sea , and as a result the stream channels to become shallow and broad . Thus , a fan shaped alluvial deposit on a river mouth formed by the deposition of successive layers of sediment . in this way , an extensive fan is formed which slopes towards the sea , several such fans are formed on the mouth of the river. These fans gradually grow towards the sea , Ultimate these fans are coalesced and a delta is formed. These deposits obstruct the free flow of the river and hence it is divided into many branches .
