Prior to 1980 Poland was ruled by a communist party, the Polish United Workers' Party. The workers of the Lenin Shipyard went on strike. Lech Walesa was the leader. They demanded a right to form independent trade unions, release of political prisoners and the end of censorship of the press. The government was forced to sign a 21 point agreement with Walesa. The government became anxious and imposed martial law in 1981. This led to fresh strikes. The negotiations resulted in an agreement for free elections. In October, 1990 the first presidential elections were held in Poland where more than one party contested. Walesa was elected the President of Poland. Poland got a democratic government and was ruled by a political party.
