Democracy in Chile:

1. Salvador Allende was elected as the President of Chile who led the ​Popular Unity coalition to victory in the presidential election in 1970.
2. A democratically elected government introduced number of policies and programmes for the poor and the workers.
3. People enjoyed political freedom and rights in Chile under Allende's rule. However, an in 1973, an elected government was overthrown by a military ruler Pinochet who the established military dictatorship depriving people of their political freedoms , not tolerating any dissent to his rule.
4. People were imprisoned, tortured, displaced etc.
5. The government under Pinochet favoured the rich capitalist section of the society.
6. Pinochet’s military rule  however, came to end with a referendum which he held in 1988.
7. Thus, political freedom was restored, Chile since then has had  Presidential elections where political parties have participated.
8. In the presidential elections of  2006,  ​Michelle Bachelet ​was elected President of Chile, who has favoured a mixed economy model.

Poland:

a. Poland  was characterised by one party system that is the Polish United Workers’ Party.  No other political party was allowed to function.
b.The party was controlled by USSR, a communist state, and did not tolerate any dissent against its leaders, though it claimed to have support of workers.
c. People could not choose leaders freely, were not allowed to form any groups, organisation independent of the Polish's party.
d. Though, the government claimed to work for the working class there was a great degree of disillusionment among them, and demanded right to strike, to form unions, better wages, end of censorship, etc.
d. With the advent of a new group Solidarity and its leader Lech Welesa , that swept through entire Poland, the group pressurized the communist regime to concede to their demands and hold elections.
e. Finally  elections took place in 1989, with Solidarity coming with a landslide victory.
f. Democracy was established in Poland, with choices were given to people in terms of parties.
g. The government so elected preferred economic freedom, no interference by the governemnt over markets.
