Solidarity or "Solidarność" in Polish, was a movement that relied on the trade unions power which engulfed and en-powered its first steps into the political arena. According to the link below it was greatly supported by USA funds in order to undermine the communist Government that rule Poland till then.

The massive numbers of trade union workers that joined the movement immediately right from the beginning gave it the momentum to grow and play important part in the political scene of Poland.
Then some strikes that took place in the country helped to expedite matters.

poland was ruled by the polish united workers party, a communist party. People could not freely choose their leaders, and the USSR was control of the government of poland and solidarity was formed when the government decided to hold election in 1989, solidarity won 99 seats and 100.
