Answer:

The main reason is climate, geography of the region and cultural factors. People dress according to the climate and the material that is found in the region while cultural factors also decide how a person dresses. Religious factors too plays a part but the actual reason is climate and availability of material. India is generally a hot country hence cotton was always a preferred material and silk was introduced later.Weaving is an art and was developed centuries ago in different parts of the subcontinent, though influences came in with trading with other countries in the form of silk, new colours and motifs.

Traditionally however, all Indians garments were unstitched and consisted of 2–3 pieces of cloth and has evolved locally to suit person from different geographical zones. Example-dhoti/ lungi with a shawl or gamcha for men along with a turban/ head dress in North, west and some parts of East/ NE India. Women wore sarees with an upper body sash or sarong which evolved to lehengas and mekhla with a chaadar or Sarong with an upper body sash with a dupatta or shawl depending on the climate.

Some states in the South like Kerela and Bodos of Assam almost dress similarly except that the material is different and the way it's wrapped. Khasis and Jaintias too wear a 2 ( or 3 ) piece cloth ( jainsem),tied on ones shoulders and cover the body since the climate is cooler unlike the warmer parts of NE India, where migration from Myanmar / SE Asia in the historic past had also influenced their way of dressing culturally speaking.

Warm and humid Assam and Kerela are miles apart but share an almost similar sense of dressing though the colours are not the same, with the Southern state preferring cool white and the NE of India preferring vibrant colours.
