It smoothes the process by forming a film between two surfaces that reduces friction and thus improves performance and efficiency. There are different variety of lubricants and oils available such as Engine Oil, Hydraulic Oil, and Greases.

When we apply a lubricant such as oil ,water or grease between the two surfaces .It forms a layer of lubricant between the surfaces ,so the friction is now between the two surfaces and the lubricant which is much less than that between two surfaces reduces friction
