There are specialized organs or structures present on the surface of a plant to exchange gases. For example:

- On the surface of leaves, small mouth like openings is present called stomata. These openings exchange gases between plant and environment.

- On the surface of stem are small openings called lenticels which perform change of gases.

- Roots exchange gases through their thin walls of root hairs.
