Answer:

Well, Instructional Design is a major topic these days not just for traditional education but for training courses or teaching anything. The first step after you’ve done the needs analysis (Why the course is required?) is making a curriculum. It becomes very trivial to any course be it a product or a service for the following reasons:

Structure: Often in learning, there is an incremental approach required. Learn to walk before you run. This becomes important as the learner needs to gain on his pre-existing knowledge and shouldn’t be immediately pushed to the deep end. So the chronology according to what needs to be taught when, needs to be decided.

Gives you concrete topics: More often than not, if there’s no pre-existing curriculum or a structure where the learning process is broken down to the take-away level, the instructor can spend a lot of time on topics which are often not effective or required for the learner.

Helps in teaching: When you look at a curriculum it gives the idea to the instructor on how to approach a particular topic. Just the process of making a curriculum can make you come up with creative ideas, the formats to use and how. Example: Teaching topics of the universe by using Animation, physics by actually showing experiment setups etc.
