Forest prevents flood in the following ways -

• The floods are mainly caused by excessive amount of rainfall.

In this case, the forest lands :

• Soaks the excessive rainwater into the soil because there are large amount of vegetation in the forest lands which demand a lot of moisture contents from the soil.

• The forest lands also prevent some of amount rainfall from reaching the ground because the thick layer of vegetation in the forest lands acts like an umbrella and retains a good amount of rainwater on it's own body surface. (leaves, wooden stem etc.)

In these ways the forest lands prevent floods.
