Hello !!
France has been five different republics with different constitutions and kinds of government.
The First Republic was established in 1792 in the French Revolution, when the masses rebelled and overthrew King Louis XVI. However, Napoleon rose to power during Republican France's wars with other nations, and eventually seized the government in a coup in 1804, creating the First French Empire. When he was finally defeated by the British, they reinstalled the old royal family back on the throne.
In 1848 there was a second revolution, caused by the miseries of the Industrial Revolution and the conservatism of the monarchy. This created the Second Republic. But it only lasted three years. Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte was its first and only president, but he seized power in 1851 and became Emperor Napoleon III.
In 1870 the French suffered a shattering defeat at the hands of the Prussians in a war to get back the disputed territories of Alsace and Lorraine for Germany. Napoleon III was actually captured. His Second French Empire fell apart and was replaced by the Third French Republic.
In 1940 Germany attacked France in World War II. They occupied most of it and set up a puppet government in the rest. Following the defeat of the Axis powers, France declared the Fourth Republic in 1945. It was a parliamentary government.
In 1958 the French rewrote their constitution to have both a president and a prime minister with separate powers. This became the Fifth, and current, Republic.
