explain how is the height of mercury in the tube of a simple barometer, a measure of the atmospheric pressure

The concept is that the atmospheric pressure in normal conditions raises the mercury column upto 76cm.This is taken as a measure when weather is normal. Now whenever the weather is getting stormy the height of mercury column will decrease which indicates falling air pressure. On this principle it works.
