Answer:
How does the relationship of Sam and Frodo differ from The Lord of the Rings book trilogy to the movie trilogy?
TL;DR: It differs very little, except for a minor change in tone and factual background.
I will try to answer that question, but it will take some explanation before I can really dive into it
Introduction
The biggest difference in Sam and Frodo's relationship is that the movie trilogy version is one more of friendship in the movies, and less of a master-servant relationship developing another friendship dimension.
In the books the difference in social status between Frodo and Sam are more clear: Frodo is seen as odd, but being of a somewhat aristocratic background and being extremely wealthy, he has a lot of respect of the Shire-folk. Sam on the other hand is a gardener: a respected gardener and the son of another greatly respected gardener, but still lower than the Bagginses. He is seen not as much as a member of the family Gamgee, but as the personal gardener of the family Baggins. In a way, it's feudalism on a very, very small scale.
Such a relationship is rather complex and can be seen and understood in many different perspectives. It is therefore my intention to first explain and describe the two characters as they are portrayed in the book with comments on how to interpret this as Tolkien originally envisioned them. This will serve as a framework which I will use to show any differences between the movie portrayal of their relationship and the canon relationship.
