Leguminous plants have the presence of Rhizobium bacteria in their root nodules. These Rhizobium bacteria have the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen to soluble nitrogen compounds like Nitrates into the soil. This enables the legume to utilize the nitrogen. In fact, the nitrogen fixation takes place in an amount much greater than the legume needs thereby even fulfilling the nitrogen demands of any other crop that is grown on that patch of land after the harvest of the legume.
