Before this u must know about capacitors. Capacitor is a device with store energy. But unlike battery it releases all the stored energy in a very short time.
The clouds in the sky are also capacitors but big in size and capacitance. The ice particles in the clouds gather at the lower surface. They rub with air and form negative charge and simultaneously the upper surface gets positive charge.
On the other hand, earth is always neutral. But due to the clouds lower surface earth acts as positive. There is a huge gap between cloud and earth's surface. When the cloud reaches very high voltage... Some million volts...the energy stored in the cloud reaches earth all at a time. This leads to lightning.
