Chemical classification of matter :

The classification can be done based on its composition at microscopic level, matter classified into

  1. Pure substances
  2. Mixtures.

pure substances :

These are the substances consists of single type of particles. All the particles of pure substances have same chemical composition.

Ex: Cu, Ag, Au, H2O, NaCl etc.,

pure substances can be divided into elements and compounds.

  • Elements: 1. metals, 2. non - metals, 3. metalloids.
  • compounds: 1. inorganic compounds, 2. organic compounds.

Mixtures:

It is defined as combination of two or more elements or compounds in any proportion so that the components donot loss their identity.

Ex: air, salt solution, sand water etc.,

Mixtures are divided into 2 types:

  1. Homogeneous mixture
  2. Heterogeneous mixture.
